Stories of Progress: Toronto doctor opens clinic for compassionate, inclusive care for kids
Dr. Raphael Buencamino came to Canada shortly before the global pandemic began – and saw firsthand how difficult it was for families to receive healthcare for their kids, encountering long wait times and a stressed system. He believed that existing issues were exacerbated by the pandemic, and after working for a time in Toronto hospitals, he decided to open his own clinic.
He started off by having conversations with his relationship managers at BMO, learning what he would need to get a clinic off the ground and open his own business, Thrive Kids Clinic.
“I looked at many different banks, and I’m very happy that I chose BMO. They were the bank to help this business grow and to make it possible.”
– Dr. Raphael Buencamino,
Thrive Kids Clinic
As an openly gay man, Dr. Buencamino says he relates to kids and young people dealing with complicated stressors in their lives. Growing up, he faced the unique challenges of finding safe spaces and healthcare providers who understood him. This experience has deeply influenced his approach, and today he is committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for LGBTQ+ youth, who often feel isolated and misunderstood. That commitment extends to every detail of the clinic – including the colourful walls and floors featuring rainbows and artful murals.
At Thrive, Dr. Buencamino and his team make it a point to go beyond treating physical health – they’re focused on mental and emotional health, too.
“I want to create a space where kids and parents alike feel heard, supported, and uplifted,” he says. This philosophy helps set Thrive Kids Clinic apart, making it a place where children feel safe to express themselves and navigate their health journeys.”
Dr. Buencamino’s dedication to personalized care has created lasting relationships with the families who visit Thrive Kids Clinic – including those who engage in lengthy travel to receive care. Many parents and teens have expressed gratitude for Dr. Buencamino’s work, sharing that the care they’ve received has been a transformative experience for their children. This individualized approach builds trust and creates a community around Thrive Kids Clinic – one where families can feel like they are part of something bigger.
Looking to the future, Dr. Buencamino hopes to serve more families across Toronto by opening a second, potentially larger clinic – and continuing his mission to provide compassionate, inclusive care that helps kids thrive.
