BMO’s Trees from Trades: Doing our part to create a more sustainable future

April 27, 2023 | Sustainability

For the third year in a row, BMO has continued the tradition of hosting our annual Trees from Trades Day, where a portion of BMO Global Markets trades revenue goes towards supporting BMO Capital Markets’ sustainability initiative of planting 500,000 trees by 2025.

The event, held in the lead up to earth day on April 19 was organized in partnership with veritree, a platform that provides on-the-go transparency to global reforestation efforts and partners with local tree planting organizations with projects across the globe.

As a result of our contribution this year, we will be able to plant 125,000 new trees. This adds to our running total of 375,000 trees planted since the start of our Trees from Trades program. That’s the equivalent of filling BMO Stadium over 271 times!

“As part of our Purpose to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life, BMO is committed to a more sustainable future. Trees from Trades, now in its third year, is an event our entire team rallies around. We’re excited to be part of a program that helps drive real progress toward a net-zero world through the planting of trees and the reduction of carbon emissions.”

Growing the good in communities worldwide

Trees from Trades may start in North America, but its impact is felt around the globe. As a result of BMO’s contribution, trees and crops will be planted in forests across Southeast Asia and Africa. In countries like Senegal that have seen decades of unsustainable farming practices, this will aid in providing more crops and agriculture to struggling communities, creating numerous employment opportunities. Through past years of the program, we’ve already helped create 1,080 workdays for the 69.2 hectares of reforestation.

Trees from Trades is another innovative way we demonstrate our leadership in sustainability and our commitment to working with our clients to enable their progress while growing the bank—and contributing to a sustainable future.

BMO has a long-standing commitment to sustainability. Find out more ways we’re lending our support with reforestation in partnership with tree planting organizations.
