Celebrating 205 years of progress. See how far we’ve come.

November 3, 2022 | Growth

Why not celebrate BMO’s 205th birthday with a visit to our brand-new BMO Heritage site?

Learn all about our proud history of growing the good for over two centuries and track our path of progress as Canada’s first bank.

BMO Corporate Archives has digitized hundreds of pages of documents never made available to the public – from our beginnings in 1817 as a single branch, to a 21st century powerhouse and one of the largest banks in North America.

“Our Corporate Archives house images, artifacts and stories about our rich history and growth. As the bank has expanded across continents, our collection has grown to reflect the heritage and culture of the many institutions that have merged with us over time to create the organization we are today.”

– Kimberley Goode, Chief Communications & Social Impact Officer

Three places to visit on the BMO Heritage site

  1. Take a deep dive in our old human resource ledgers and employee photos from 1880 to 1920.
You can now meet the people who worked at the bank more than 100 years ago and search for friends and family members who were part of Team BMO way way way back in the day.
  2. Learn about the milestones in BMO’s History related to significant economic developments in the North Atlantic world, as well as artefacts documenting the evolution of money, and antiques and records that document technological changes along the way.
  3. Explore digital exhibits on BMO’s mergers and acquisitions, our history in the U.S., and our logos and slogans over the years.

Add it to your bookmarks, check monthly for new content and discover all the new BMO Heritage site has to offer to remind us that banking isn’t only about numbers and money.
