BMO donates to support mental health in the Muslim community in response to tragic event in London, ON

June 15, 2021 | Giving and sponsorships

In the last week, BMO employees have been expressing their shock and sadness at the murder of a London, Ontario family on June 6. We join with Canadians across the country in standing with the Muslim community and all communities who have been subject to racist violence. In response to the tragedy, BMO is donating $100,000 to Naseeha, a mental health resource organization providing counseling support, web therapy sessions and mental health support, with a focus on the Muslim community.

Because the attack in London has shaken so many, Naseeha is experiencing an unprecedented influx of calls, overextending their resources. Our support will allow Naseeha to hire more counsellors, increasing their paid counsellor roster, and help expand their volunteer capacity from 15 to 25.

BMO’s support will also allow Naseeha to expand their hours of operation, and support community members by calls and texts in a greater number of languages. Although geared to the Muslim community, Naseeha offers services to all people, regardless of religion, race, and ethnicity, as well as age, sexual orientation, gender identity, family makeup, social status, income, ability, and physical and mental health.

As Darryl White declared in his recent statement in the wake of the fatal attack, “When we come together to denounce racism and hatred in all forms we take away the power of extremists to intimidate others.” In supporting community needs and mental health, BMO lives its commitment to zero barriers to inclusion, in line with our Purpose.
